Tell Us Your Story for the Library Book
By Mail: Friends of the Braswell Memorial Library By Email: floodstories@hotmail.com The Friends of
the Braswell Memorial Library want your story about The Great Flood of
September 1999 for a book that will commemorate the opening of the new
library building. Just as we enjoy
reading how our ancestors during the Colonial period managed day-to-day
or how towns coped during a siege by the Roman Legions, people in the
future will wonder what our area and lives were like before the great
flood; what daily life was like during the emergency; and how we handled
the recovery. By collecting the
stories, the Friends hope to examine what it is that pulls communities
together in times of crisis, what we learned about ourselves and our
community, and, now over a year later, where we need to go from here. Contributors of all
ages, organizations, agencies, and businesses in Nash and Edgecombe
Counties should submit first-hand accounts of escapes, rescues, loss,
impact, and recovery. Even
if you were not impacted personally, interviews or “as-told-to
stories” are welcome. If you need
suggestions or help in writing your account, call the reference desk of
the library at 252-442-1951 ext. 230 and leave your name and phone
number so a volunteer can contact you. The Friends of
the Braswell Memorial Library will select and publish a representative
collection of stories. All
contributors, however, will be acknowledged in the book that will be
donated to the library’s Local History Collection at the opening of
the new building planned for January 2002. All submissions must
include the contributor’s name, address, and phone number. All submissions (paper, computer diskettes, photos, videos,
or audio tapes) become the property of The Braswell Memorial Library, so
do not submit your only copy. Submission
must be postmarked by July 1, 2001, and sent:
